In South Africa, 78% of Grade Four children cannot read for meaning (PIRLS, 2016). We, at Shine Literacy, are helping to transform the prospects of some of South Africa’s most vulnerable children by breaking the destructive cycle of poor literacy, low educational attainment, wasted potential and poverty. We do this by providing structured English literacy support to children, providing storybooks and readers and empowering parents and caregivers through Family Literacy Workshops. We work in partnership with like-minded NGO’s, individuals and non-profit organisations to raise awareness and develop approaches that are appropriate and sustainable.

We are an academy geared towards the development of young adults between the ages of 18-25. We aim to provide a platform for youth to deepen their resilience and unleash their potential through mental, physical, emotional and spiritual development, enabling them to be role models and agents of positive change. We also work with schools to provide support to learners who may be in need of additional support to remain in and complete their schooling.

Through rigorous training, we give teachers the tools to use the power of genre-based pedagogy in every subject for every learner at every level. Our methodology has been developed in response to current urgent needs, particularly of marginalised learners, to rapidly improve reading and writing for educational access and success. These theoretical foundations are integrated in a set of teaching strategies that are optimally practical in diverse classroom settings, and accessible for teachers to acquire and use as part of their ordinary practice in their grade or curriculum area.

Commonly known as “LoveLife”, we are a South African non-profit youth organisation that was established in 1999 as a joint initiative of leading South African non-governmental organisations, private foundations and the South African government. With the passage of time our vision has evolved to not only focus on HIV prevention, but rather to become “a leader in Youth Health Promotion” where Health, in line with the World Health Organisation (WHO), is defined as a “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being”. We position our programmes not only for risk reduction and active lifestyles but also as the generator of empowered young people with a better future. We are POWERING THE FUTURE!

We believe in the power of music to unlock the potential within every child. The Marimba Jam Rising Stars Program is the catalyst for this ideology. We provide regular, weekly marimba band classes to under-resourced schools that have no access to music education programs. In line with our motto “Finding Harmony in Community”, we host annual events such as The Marimba Jam Festival that serve to promote nation-building and social cohesion amongst learners from different socio-economic backgrounds. We use music as a vehicle for transformation to create a more peaceful and equal society.

We work with schools in building a culture of well-being where everyone can thrive. Through a whole-school approach we include learners, parents, caregivers, educators and school staff. We offer psychosocial support and professional counselling (in person or remote access through technology) at no charge to our partner school communities. We also offer resilience building workshops for learners, positive parenting workshops for caregivers and professional development workshops for educators.
