In South Africa, 78% of Grade Four children cannot read for meaning (PIRLS, 2016). We, at Shine Literacy, are helping to transform the prospects of some of South Africa’s most vulnerable children by breaking the destructive cycle of poor literacy, low educational attainment, wasted potential and poverty. We do this by providing structured English literacy support to children, providing storybooks and readers and empowering parents and caregivers through Family Literacy Workshops. We work in partnership with like-minded NGO’s, individuals and non-profit organisations to raise awareness and develop approaches that are appropriate and sustainable.

Through rigorous training, we give teachers the tools to use the power of genre-based pedagogy in every subject for every learner at every level. Our methodology has been developed in response to current urgent needs, particularly of marginalised learners, to rapidly improve reading and writing for educational access and success. These theoretical foundations are integrated in a set of teaching strategies that are optimally practical in diverse classroom settings, and accessible for teachers to acquire and use as part of their ordinary practice in their grade or curriculum area.
We are a non-profit education development agency. Our mission is to provide quality education development opportunities for mathematics and science teachers and learners in under-resourced and rural schools in South Africa. Our organisation offers teaching support, content support, and resources for teaching and learning. We are also offer support for professional learning communities, school leadership support and psycho-social support programmes. We are also involved in advocacy work and research within the education sector.
Our aim is to support learners by providing the necessary skills required to define life and career goals, enabling them to formulate high school exit plans before reaching grade twelve. Learners in Grade 8 receive an exciting psychosocial support programme called Minds and Hearts that leaves them fired up to remain committed to school. We then offer a Career Coaching programme for Grades 10 to 12. We believe that by Grade 12, every learner must have a clearly defined exit strategy. By providing the proper support at the right age and school level, we aim to transform the way learners think and feel about achieving dreams and life desires.
