Raising the Next Generation of Heroes: Mentorship, Masculinity & Safe Spaces

In this episode of Drop-In Discussions, we sit down with Kolping Mbumba and Sivuyile Makatetsi from Heroes Academy to explore what it truly means to be a hero — and to make one.

Founded in 2021, Heroes Academy works with boys aged 14–18 to build healthier habits, positive identities, and safer communities. As part of Men’s Health Awareness Month, this conversation unpacks the realities facing young men today, from trauma and bullying to gender-based violence and harmful social norms.

Together, we discuss the root causes of violent behaviour, the role of mentorship and psycho-social support, and why creating safe spaces exclusively for boys is critical. We also reflect on the powerful connection between home life, schooling, and a young person’s sense of purpose — and how education can play a role in shaping positive masculinity.

This episode is a hopeful, grounded conversation about responsibility, resilience, and redefining what strength looks like for the next generation of men.
