With the 2022 academic year well underway, Rahima Essop, Head of Communications and Advocacy at the Zero Dropout Campaign, warns of factors that make learners more likely to drop out. The Covid-19 pandemic has seen a rise in learners not attending school and who may never return. Essop explains to Newzroom Afrika host Xoli Mngambi that even before the pandemic, about 40% of learners who started school in Grade 1 do not complete matric.
