Around 40% of learners who start Grade 1 will exit the schooling system before completing Grade 121 because of various push and pull factors that relate to experiences, influences and conditions inside and outside of the school environment.

Although much work has been done to improve the quality of education at public schools since the end of Apartheid, a comprehensive, multi-stakeholder and data-driven approach to reducing the rate of school dropout is much-needed.
